Maternity Group Home Grant Expands Services for Pregnant or Parenting Teens
Youth In Need has received a $200,000 maternity group home federal grant from the Family and Youth Services Bureau to fund the expansion of services for pregnant or parenting teens. The grant allows Youth In Need to serve up to four teen moms or dads, ages 16 to 21, and their children, at the agency’s Transitional Living Program (TLP) group home or the Supported Apartments Program.
Pairing youth services with child development services is key. Not only do the teen parents learn independent-living skills and work towards educational and employment goals, but they also learn specific child development and parenting skills to help them grow as parents. Youth and their children receive immediate acceptance into Youth In Need’s Head Start and Early Head Start program as part of this innovative program model. There are three pregnant or parenting youth in the program currently, with two children participating in the Head Start home-based program and one enrolled in the St. Peters Head Start and Early Head Start Center.
